Proofreading
The final polish before publishing
What is proofreading?
Service Overview
Authors often confuse proofreading and copyediting or think they are the same thing. This confusion probably stems from the fact that, at their heart, both services focus on grammar and spelling. But—and this is a big “but”— proofreading is strictly done on fully formatted PDF versions of your book, not Word Document manuscripts.
In proofreading, I will focus on:
- Catching any typos or grammatical errors that made it through the copy edit
- Checking for formatting issues, like page numbers, scene, and chapter breaks
- Making sure the formatting looks consistent throughout the book
This is basically everyone’s last look before you hit “publish!”
It’s important to know that if I copyedit your manuscript, I cannot proofread your fully formatted book. It’s best to have a fresh set of eyes on your book with this service. If you want a combined copyedit and proofreading service from Crumpled Page, I will have another trusted editor proofread your book.
Sample Edits: Complimentary sample edits are available for proofreading services on a 1,000-word excerpt from your manuscript. For sample edits, I request you send your complete manuscript, or as much of it as you are willing to share, so that I can select an excerpt that will adequately show the scope and style of editing you can expect from me. Longer sample edits are available for $15 per extra thousand words. This amount will be credited to your project if you have me proofread your manuscript.
An NDA will accompany all sample edits, so you can have confidence that I will not steal or distribute your story.
How It Works
We jump on a 30-minute call to ensure we’re on the same page about services and expectations.
After that, I will send you a proposal and a contract.
I read through your entire book and mark up any suggested changes on the PDF.
After you get the manuscript feedback and style sheet, we will schedule a 30-minute video call to discuss my feedback and answer your questions. You’ll also have unlimited access to me via email while you make your revisions.
